Dr. Hong-Zong Lin
Founder, Chief Technical Officer
Dr. Lin received his Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley (UCB) in 1990, where he developed many advanced concepts in Probabilistic Technology and its application to finite element (FE) technique including development of the FE-based probabilistic software, CALREL. Dr. Lin has 14 years of industrial experience in structural analysis and design including finite element (FE) analysis, probabilistic analysis of composite structures, probabilistic finite element analysis, uncertainty modeling including empirical determination of distribution models and estimation of their statistical parameter from observed data, system and component reliability analysis, probabilistic risk analysis, reliability verification tests, and analytical calculation of response gradients.
Dr. Lin co-founded PredictionProbe in 1997 where he has been instrumental in the development and implementation of Probabilistic Technology to many industries including engineering, insurance, and finance. Prior to PredictionProbe and upon graduation from UCB, he joined Boeing North American (BNA), previously Rockwell International, where he was involved in development of the probabilistic structural analysis technology and the probabilistic finite element computer program, FEBREL. Dr. Lin integrated FEBREL code with ANSYS®, MSC/NASTRAN®, and LS DYNA 3D®. He has applied the Probabilistic Technology to many advanced structures including but not limited to Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) cryogenic upper stage structure, MIR/Shuttle capture and load analyses, the NASA JSC’s Orbiter Docking System External Airlock Assembly, and NASA LaRC’s PLS, HL-20 Spacecraft. Dr. Lin has published 20 papers in the field of probabilistic methods and is one of the pioneers in the development of first-order reliability method in original space.
Dr. Lin has received numerous awards and recognition including the prestigious 1996 SAE International Probabilistic Methods Implementation Award (jointly with Dr. Khalessi) and several engineering awards for outstanding performance and innovative engineering approach from BNA. Dr. Lin (jointly with Dr. Khalessi) has a patent for development of a new iteration procedure for identification of the most-probable-failure point in original space. He is also Chairman of the SAE G-11 PM computational methods technical committee.
